Kate preparing paper for print run

Kate is measuring the sheet of 190 gsm Incisioni paper in preparation for tearing down to the print edition size.

Kate preparing paper for print run

The straight edge needs to be held firmly and the paper needs equal pressure as Kate starts the tearing process. (this can be done by painting water with a watercolour brush along the straight edge and then torn - the result is softer)

Kate preparing paper for print run

By keeping pressure on the straight edge and tearing against the narrow side where the ruler is, a clean tear similar in 'look' to the deckle edge is achieved. Kate is tearing 6 sheets into 4.

Omanu lino printing - my best prints

This is the start of the lesson, I am demonstrating to the year 5 and 6 class how to carve with these new carving tools imported from Japan. They are made from 2 high grade steels annealed together (sword steel) are VERY sharp and will hold their sharpness for a long time. My rule is to hold the tools with two hands on the handle. I carry plasters but I do not have an ambulance!
The cutting angle is between 15 and 30 degrees. We must use a bench hook.
